The Hostage

7th – 23rd March

After the great success of Relatively Speaking, the amazing season at
the Lisbon Players continues with something completely different - the
ground-breaking tragicomedy with music, The Hostage. Designed and
directed by Jonathan Weightman and with musical direction by Louise
Kakoma the play, which is set in a house of ill-repute in Dublin in
the 50s, has a large cast of talented actors and singers, both
familiar faces and some newcomers.

An Irish tragicomedy with music
For the first time in Portugal we are proud to be bringing you a scintillating production of this ground-breaking play with its poignant love story set against the background of the comic goings on of a dilapidated Dublin boarding house in 1959.
A  young man is due to hang in Belfast. In reprisal the IRA take a young English hostage prisoner. He is taken to a safe house in Dublin. But that house turns out to be a run-down brothel where the shenanigans are endless, the inhabitants as ready to break open a bottle of stout or into song as deal with the matter in hand. Amidst the confusion a tender love affair blossoms between the cockney soldier and the convent-educated country girl who works there. Come along to find out how it all ends!
